“Hope” by filmmakers Stuart Reaugh and Thomas Buchan chronicles the struggles of artist Ken Paquette, his partner Winnie Peters, and their five boys on the Schkam Native Reserve. As their
lives undergo wrenching changes, including the dissolution of Ken and Winnie’s relationship when Rick, an ex-con, enters the picture, the family navigates poverty, addiction, violence, and love. Filmed over four seasons with a painterly eye for detail, the documentary captures the juxtaposition of the permanence of the land with the fleeting drama of human life. With no imposed narrative, the film intimately portrays each family member’s voice, exploding stereotypes and revealing the raw honesty of their experiences.
